Do You Hear What I Hear

Dear Brothers and Sisters in Christ,

Did you know that the song “Do You Hear What I Hear?” is more than a Christmas song?

It was written in 1962 during the Cuban missile crisis. The author took the story of Jesus and set it alongside a prayer for peace… and set it to music.

St. Paul writes that faith comes by hearing (Romans 10:17). Many of us were taught to read the Bible.

I invite you to spend the new year listening to the Bible.

There are lots of options: podcasts that read through the Bible, digital audio Bibles, the Bible on CD. Did you know there is even a recording of Johnny Cash reading the New Testament?

Whatever format you choose, I hope you are blessed in your listening to God’s word.

Do you hear what I hear?

A Forgiveness List

Dear Brothers and Sisters in Christ,

I get a bit nostalgic in November and December as the calendar year comes to a close. If 2020 and 2021 felt slower than usual (mostly), 2022 felt faster than usual (mostly) as we eased back into familiar rhythms. For me that meant that I spent more time doing and less time reflecting.

I love writing our family Christmas letter. I usually start by clicking through photos I’ve taken during the last year to remind me of the highs and the lows… but mostly to just remember all that happened in the last year. That practice of remembering also comes with some regrets. I bet you have some too.

Tim Keller has written a new book on forgiveness. It’s titled Forgive: How Can I and How Should I? I haven’t read it yet, but based on other books he’s written, like the Prodigal God, I’m sure it is very good. It’s at the top of my list.

As we look back on the last year, why not put together a “forgiveness list”… and then work your way through it in 2023? What do you think?
